What is art? One is tempted to paraphrase St. Augustine's answer to another inquiry: "What is time then? If nobody asks me, I know: but if I were desirous to explain it to one that should ask me, plainly I know not."¹ Having said this, Augustine went on to look for an answer anyway, and so should we. But first I should clarify the question, make it more precise, show that it is worth asking, and think what a satisfactory answer would have to look like.
